Ward Lock Guide

It seems rather strange that this photograph of the southern part of Matlock Bath, taken from the Heights of Abraham, was published in a guide book at least twenty years after it was taken.

By the time the guide this photograph appears in was published - in 1932 - the Fish Pond Stables (centre, bottom, opposite the Fishpond Hotel) had been demolished quite a while. The site was redeveloped in 1910 when the Royal Pavilion was built! The Royal Hotel, or at least the part of it that is shown here (centre, just below the middle), had been destroyed by fire; the annexe that was built at the back of the hotel and survived that fire hadn't been built. So it is likely this picture was taken about 1908 and maybe even earlier.

The view shows Cat Tor, to the left, with the River Derwent below the limestone cliffs. On the opposite bank of the river is the Derwent Gardens with the Switchback within its grounds. On the right is the Royal Pavilion and in the distance is Cromford Hill and Black Rocks.
